Skincare: Dry Skin Vs. Dehydrated Skin

Welcome back beautiful!

Here' s a topic many are very confused with. Trust me, I have been in your shoes!

For many years, I thought I had dry skin and ended up spending a fortune on anti drying skin creams, lotions and a whole bunch of skincare products which never worked on me. I would wash my face with the most gentle cleansers, use the best moisturizers and still feel my skin stretching from "beneath". My skin felt so stretchy even when the surface of my skin was loaded with oil. I used a lot of products that was otherwise raved by everyone who's used it, but somehow it never worked for me.

I then discussed the problem with my mom who is a skincare specialist and she immediately pointed out that I did not have dry skin but DEHYDRATED skin! As much as it sounds like the same thing, let me tell you there is a massive difference between the two.

I researched a lot on this and found out that I had dehydrated skin as my skin lacked the water content it needs to stay supple. I barely drank one glass of water everyday (I still can't believe it) and this clearly this took toll on my skin causing my skin to have a transepidermal water loss. Another factor that contributed to my dehydrated skin was all the air conditioning. I live in the Middle East where it's hot almost nine months a year, so the air conditioners are ON all the time, day and night. We spend our lives under these moisture sucking machines. The worst part is, living in AC's never made me thirsty, which I thought is okay - I was so wrong. For ages, everyone around you advise you to drink plenty of water and you ignore it and think it's okay, like I did. Your skin and body can get so dehydrating if you don't drink enough water! You can look up on the internet and you'll see millions of other dangers you will project yourself onto without enough water in your body.

You skin can appear dehydrated either because you are not having enough water OR because you're not consuming enough oil in your diet - Yes, oil! You skin need oils too. Try to consume good oils in your diet. Fish is a great source of such good oils. You could also take fish oil or Vitamin E oil supplements to see visible difference within just weeks. It is also found in dairy products, meat, eggs, cereals, nuts and green leafy vegetables. Mine was however due to the lack of moisture aka water between my skin layers.

Dehydrated skin has nothing to do with your skin type. So your skin could be oily, but still be dehydrated! This could get you confused if you don't know the difference between dryness and dehydration.

I started monitoring my water levels ever since, okay I admit I don't drink two litre everyday, but my skin has shown a massive difference after I started taking lots of water. I don't get the stretchy feeling anymore after washing my face. Skin looks much more supple and hydrated! It's amazing what water can do to your body :)

Another trick that helped me were humidifiers! The AC's are still on during the night when we sleep, but the humidifiers in my room really helped keep dehydration at bay. My skin feels so much better in the mornings.

So next time you feel your skin is stretchy, check if you're having enough water. For all you know, your skin could be dehydrated! My skin is so thankful I figured this out sooner.

Have you had a similar problem? Do you have other tricks to combat dehydration? Tell me all about it in the comments below :) And hey, don't forget to fill your water bottle

Boots Soltan Shimmering After Sun Gel Review

Hello beauties!

Dryness has hit my skin so hard this time, I was longing for some good moisturizer. Of course I love my Johnson’s soft cream, but I wanted to try something new. I’ve been crying about this from over a week and that's when my husband surprised me with Soltan Shimmering After Sun Gel from Boots!!

Price : 4.5 GBP approx.

It comes in a really cute blue packaging which I love! I also like the flip top cap which is my fav, no mess!
Claims:
Gives subtle instant shimmer
Non greasy
Easily absorbed
Non pore-blocking
Dermatologically tested
Hypoallergenic

The gel itself is quite shimmery blue gel, so when you apply it you wouldn’t imagine it’s gonna leave your skin this shimmery. Once it spreads, BAM!! It leaves your face looking like a disco ball for a minute or two. Thankfully it doesn’t last too long. After a while it gives you just the right amount of shimmer you need for the day! It doesn’t make your skin feel sticky or greasy. The shimmer however stayed put for 4-5 hours and wore off with the sweat.

I like the smell of it, very faint aloe-floral smell. It's not too strong!

I am not a sun person, so don’t really use it “After Sun”. I just wanted something soothing and moisturizing! Personally I didn’t feel it’s very soothing, nor is it moisturizing!! I wore this alone and for a while the skin felt moisturized but after an hour it left my skin feeling stretchy dry L It was quite disappointing as I had kept my hopes high from the looks of it.

I mixed this with my favorite moisture and I noticed the shimmer lasted much longer and is currently my favorite way of wearing it. I do not recommend using this as a moisturizer or anything close to it.

Final Verdict : I am not impressed with the results. It did not break me out, however that does not change the fact that it’s not a great product! Other than the shimmer, there’s nothing that really works. I will continue to use this mixed with my moisturizer till I finish the product.

1.5 stars for this for the shimmers!

Olay Regenerist Advance Cleansing System: Review

One of my colleagues at work bought  Clarisonic and she was raving about how well it works on her skin. That’s the first time I was ever hearing about Clarisonic. After a few weeks I noticed visible difference on her skin and I thought I should get one too. So I headed out to Sephora in search of Clarisonic and to my surprise the basic model was QAR 695 (Approx. INR 11,500 – Well I don’t think it’s that expensive in India)!!
I did not want to shell out so much on a face cleanser as I am naturally blessed with acne-free skin. I still wanted something that would cleanse my skin well and make it softer and smoother. I researched a lot and watched at least 12-15 videos on YouTube to check how Olay Regenerist (also called Olay Pro X in some countries) worked for them, which I heard is the cheaper alternative to Clarisonic. I did not see one video/review where anyone said they did not like it. So I thought I should really try it.

This is how the box looks like. It comes with the cleansing unit, a replaceable brush head, 2 AA batteries and a sample size cleanser from Olay.I got mine from Carrefour for QAR 119.50 (Approx. INR 2000) which is a steal compared to Clarisonic. I couldn’t wait to try it!

It’s very handy, and is not too big nor very small. It fits my palm perfectly! The unit runs on two AA or AAA batteries and is fairly easy to load the batteries.

I have been using this since over 2 months now and it’s still going good! I’m sure I’ll have to change it soon, but I really like how long it lasts. The unit is also light weight and is perfect for travel ! The brush looks very rough in the picture, but is amazingly smooth on the skin. The only thing I’m worried about would be if the brush would get damaged if I throw it in the luggage with my clothes. I’ve not travelled with this yet, but I am planning to keep this in a box when I do so.
How I use it : I would use a makeup remover to get all my eye makeup out before I use this on my face. I would then wet my face, dot face wash all over my face and neck and then turn the device on.

The device has two buttons – One is the power ON/OFF button and just below that is the speed control. It runs in Low or High. I usually use the Low setting on days I’m not wearing much makeup and use High when I have makeup on.

As soon as you turn this ON the brush starts to rotate anti-clockwise. I use it for not more than one minute on my face, concentrating on all parts of my face equally. It is very gentle on the skin and makes you want to use for more than a couple of minutes. But one minute is more than enough to get all the dirt out! It leaves the skin visibly smoother in just one use. The device is also water resistant but I have never used it in the shower.

I have been using this just before bed from over two months. It has really changed the texture of my skin. My skin is visibly softer and smoother now and I noticed the tiny dry spots I used to have is way better after using this! My skin gets less shiny during the day and I cannot explain how beautifully my foundation glides on my skin, no dry patches, no fuss!

To sum up,

Pros:

·         Leaves skin smooth and soft
·         Light weight device
·         Water Resistant
·         Visibly clearer skin after weeks of use
·         Gentle brush, not at all harsh on skin
·         Reasonable price
·         Runs on battery, no charger

Cons:

·         Does not come with a travel cover for the brush

Final Verdict : 4.5 stars for Olay Regenerist!
I’m extremely happy with this purchase! I would highly recommend this to everyone :)
